10 Laser Hair Removal Myths Busted

12 de Janeiro de 2009, 22:00 , por Desconhecido - | Ninguém está seguindo este artigo ainda.

Women have long sought painless permanent hair removal solutions. They tried almost everything from shaving to scraping, threading and waxing, but none of them offered a permanent solution. If you are not satisfied with these traditional hair removal techniques, laser hair removal is worth considering. A latest study has shown that laser treatment is one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures in the world.

Despite the continuing increase in the popularity of laser hair removal, there are several myths that encompass the procedure that still prevent many applicants from opting for laser treatment. If you are also confused as to whether or not to opt for the procedure, simply because your friend says it is not safe, or if your friend or friend has had a burned skin, or a loved one told you that the procedure is very expensive and you can't afford it, keep reading and you might end up changing your mind about laser treatment.

Here are some common myths and latest facts about laser hair removal:

Myth n. # 1: Lasers Can Damage Your Internal Organs

Reality: it's just propaganda! The laser beam cannot exceed a defined limit, not to mention the heat of the laser. The lasers used for hair removal can penetrate only a quarter of a mm into the skin, so how can they reach the internal organs? Laser hair removal is an extremely safe procedure that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). All the side effects encountered are temporary and disappear on their own within a few days.

Myth # 2: The procedure is extremely painful.

Fact: Most patients experience mild to moderate pain and discomfort when the laser beams hit the skin, but the discomfort is very bearable. Patients have also reported burning sensations in the treated areas, but again this is bearable and not outside the patient's pain threshold. Most people compare these sensations to the rupture of an elastic band on the skin. If you have pinched and plucked, believe me, you will find that laser treatment is a virtually painless procedure. However, if your pain threshold is low, your surgeon can perform the procedure after sleeping the treatment area with topical anesthesia.

Myth # 3: Lasers don't work on dark skin and light hair.

Fact: Initially, lasers were not recommended for people with dark skin because they were at risk for skin burns. But with technological advancements, we now have lasers that work very well for people with dark skin and light hair. Some newer lasers also treat people with fair skin and fair hair. Therefore, there are no more restrictions on laser hair removal. People with dark hair and fair skin can also benefit from the excellent laser results.

Myth # 4: the procedure only works on the face

Fact: Lasers can be used almost anywhere on the body, from the face to the chest and from the back to the arms and legs. The most commonly treated facial areas include the chin and upper lips. On the body, you can effectively use lasers to remove unwanted hair from your neck, hands, feet, arms, legs, chest, back, abdomen, and thighs. The underarm and bikini areas are among the most frequently treated areas. The only limitation on lasers is that they are not recommended for treatments around the eyes, as they can be dangerous.

Myth # 5: everyone gets the same results

Reality: again a myth or propaganda of the suppliers. The results of laser hair removal vary greatly from person to person depending on the color of the skin and the color, type and texture of the hair you want to remove. Light hairs react less to laser beams. On the other hand, thick and thick dark hair is best treated with lasers because they absorb the maximum thermal energy transmitted by lasers. A person with dark hair and light skin is considered an ideal candidate for laser hair removal.

Myth # 6: laser hair removal is recommended during pregnancy

Fact: During pregnancy, estrogen levels rise in women's bodies and experience increased hair growth. This leaves them wondering whether or not they can get laser hair removal. Although there is no proven evidence that laser hair removal is not good for pregnant women, the effects of the laser on the baby are still unknown. This is why doctors recommend that pregnant women wait for delivery.

Myth # 7: lasers can cause skin cancer

Reality: This is another unfounded and overrated myth about lasers. As stated above, lasers are extremely safe and have obtained FDA approval. No study has been able to link laser hair removal to skin cancer.

Myth # 8: one laser session is enough

Fact: Like all other non-invasive cosmetic procedures, laser hair removal also requires multiple sessions to achieve the desired results. On average, 4-6 sessions are necessary for permanent hair removal. But it can vary greatly from person to person depending on the color and texture of the hair. Dark, thick hair requires fewer sessions than thin, light hair.

Myth # 9: laser hair removal results are permanent

Fact: This is perhaps the biggest myth surrounding treatment. Lasers do not permanently remove hair; in fact, they reduce hair growth. But it is possible that the hair will grow after the treatment, but it will be fine and well. Most patients also need treatment to maintain results, but they are not very common. Two sessions per year are enough to maintain the results.

Myth # 10: it is an expensive procedure

Fact: Laser hair removal is a little expensive, but not to the extent that an average person can't afford it. Furthermore, the price of treatment varies considerably from person to person and from provider to provider. With technological advances, the treatment has become more affordable and accessible. In fact, the procedure helps you save time and money as it is not a lifelong procedure like waxing and threading.
