Nokrek Festival 2021
The Meghalaya Tourism division gears up to introduce the very first Nokrek Festival 2021 in East Garo Hills. Daribokgre Playground will have the two-day occasion till December 18.
The celebration will be coordinated by the A'chik Tourism Society. It will be a cheerful and gleeful time. With sports, gastronomy, music, and comprehensive developments, just as experience, the celebration is stretching out beyond Christmas. The festival is being coordinated to check the Golden Jubilee of the province of Meghalaya's creation.
The A'chik Tourism Society will include various contests throughout the two-day occasion. Arrow based weaponry, a conventional Meghalayan sport, will be a component of the celebration. There will be a singing rivalry and a moving contest during the occasion. The "Between Village Tug of War," a game wherein a ton of towns from all over Meghalaya contend, will be arranged. Citrus tasting contests, ziplining cooking rivalries, and conventional music rivalries are only a couple of the exercises planned for the event.

Mising belongs to a greater group of Tani people, who speaks the language of the Sino-Tibetan family, which comprises many tribes in Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet. All these Tani tribes Share linguistic, cultural and ritual similarities. The Mising tribes represent the second largest ethnic and linguistic group of Assam. The Misings are an ethnic group inhabiting the districts of Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat district of Assam. Some of these tribes live in and around Pachighat of the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. After the Bodos in Assam, they are the largest ethnic tribes in North East India.
The Misings belongs to a mixture of East Asian as well as South Asian sub-race of the Mongoloid race similar to a mixture of the Mongoloid sub-race of the people from Southern China. They now belong to a Tibeto-Burman family of the Mongoloid group. It is not known exactly where they migrated from, but it is popularly believed that they were dwellers of the hills of present-day Arunachal Pradesh. This explains the culture and linguistic similarities they have with many Tani tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. Other Tani tribes are Adi, Apatani, Nyishi, Padam and others in Arunachal Pradesh. There was a battle fought among various Tani groups for land and property. Some of the Mising people descended down to plains in Assam in order to make a peaceful settlement. They are migrated to the plains of Assam prior to the advent of Ahoms, around the 13th century and settled in the riverside area of the Brahmaputra and Subansiri. The river Brahmaputra is a source of various flora and fauna that attracted them, for their livelihood.

Addressing the media at the APSLA conference hall on Monday, Sona said that due to some uncertainty, logistics management and time, the decision to celebrate the day in the erstwhile five districts - Kameng, Subansiri, Siang, Lohit, and Tirap - on the same day had to be revoked.

However, the celebration will be held at Yupia outdoor stadium with a maximum of 7,000 spectators. Moreover, besides formal programs, different cultural events, workshops, symposiums and seminars etc., will be held from February 16 to February 19. "The numbers of spectators had to be decreased due to the recent COVID protocol. The stadium can accommodate 15,000 people, so at least 7,000 will be allowed on the day as per the COVID guidelines,"
He also informed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Bollywood actor and brand ambassador of the celebration Sanjay Dutt will be gracing the valedictory function as chief guest and special guest respectively, on February 20.
