U.S. citizens currently abroad with passports expiring at or after January 1st, 2020, may be eligible to utilize an expired U.S. passport for return travel to the United States until June 30 2022. Certain criteria apply, and we encourage U.S. citizens to confirm their eligibility for traveling on an expired passport
The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security have collaborated together with airlines commercial to prolong the temporary measure and ease the possibility for U.S. citizens to use some expired passports to travel from overseas straight back to United States. This extension will ease the current travel issues caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
The expiration date has been extended. U.S. passports cannot be used to travel from the United States to an international destination, or to travel in a foreign nation for any duration greater than a connection to an airport in the direction of in the United States or to a United States territory.
You can be eligible for travel with your passport that is expired You are eligible to travel with your expired passport if all of the conditions can be proven to be true:
- You are an U.S. citizen.
- You are currently overseas and are looking for your return directly in your home country of the United States.
- You fly straight to United States, a United States territory, or only"transit" ("connecting flight") through a different country upon your returning to the United States or to a United States Territory.
- The passport you had expired was in effect up to 10 years. If your age was 15 old or older or younger at the time your visa was granted, the expired passport was valid for 5 years.
- Your passport that expired is unharmed.
- Your passport, which is valid for a year, is unaltered.
- Your passport with a date of expiration can be found in the possession of you.
You are not eligible to fly with your expired passport:
- You would like to travel of America. United States to an international destination.
- You are currently on the move and are looking to travel to another country for any stay that is longer than an air connection towards America. United States or to a United States territory.
- Your expired passport is limited in terms of validity.
- The passport you have expired is a special issue passport (such as an official, diplomatic service, or a passport with no fee).
- Your passport that is expired has been damaged.
- Your passport expiration date has been changed.
- The passport you have expired isn't on your person.
