Impact of Good Pre-Filtration and Cartridge Filtration on RO Membrane

6 de Agosto de 2021, 4:55, por Pearl Water - 0sem comentários ainda

Good Filtration is very important in an RO Plant as it will help the Membrane present in the RO Plant to work smoothly and reduce fouling. It increases the durability of the membrane and reduced service expenses. In this blog, I am going to describe the 5 important of keeping a good Cartridge Filter & Pre- Filtration and how one can select a proper pre-cartridge filter.

Importance of Filter:

  1. Removal of suspended solids to avoid membrane fouling: Pre-filtration (cartridge or depth filtration) is an important part of giving someone's performance of Ro Plant. The cartridge filter's ability to remove suspended particulates, colloids, and bigger color inflicting organics from the feed stream greatly impacts the performance and longevity of any Ro equipment.
  2. Achieving low SDI to guard against membrane fouling: SDI, Color, and turbidity are the key factors that determine the proper use of any spiral wound RO/NF membrane components. A good multimedia depth filter followed by robust cartridge filters is designed to decrease “SDI, Color, and turbidity” increasing the life span of RO/NF components also allowing the continuous high performance of spiral wound RO Membrane components.
  3. Removing bacteria to prevent biofouling of the membranes: The bacteria's size range from 0.2 to 2 microns' width or diameter of 1 to 10 microns long for the non-spherical species, thus a 1-micron filter can remove most of the bacteria's and cysts in waters where biofouling is happening.
  4. Lower operating expenses of the system: Proper pretreatment prevents fouling of the membranes and leads to lower operative costs. The savings consist of the reduction of chemicals for improvement, lower power consumption, and extended membrane life.
  5. Reduced Expense: Proper pretreatment helps in reducing the SDI substance, which results in the extension of the design flux of the membranes and thereby reducing the number of membranes needed to treat a constant volume of water. This finally decreases the capital cost and a smaller overall footprint.

Points to keep in mind before purchasing a proper cartridge pre-filter

  1. Nominal rating - The nominal rating for a filter is an arbitrary value that is assigned by the filter manufacturer and is expressed in terms of retention percentage of a given challenge media like ISO basic test, dust, or glass beads. The worth might represent the percentage of the complete distribution of particles that's removed from the test fluid or the percentage of a particular sized particle. Nominal filtration ratings are usually used while comparing the performance of depth and non-membrane filters
  2. Absolute rating - Absolute rating is that the size of the smallest particle preserved by a filter with a stated efficiency, like 99%, under defined test conditions. Absolute rating is generally applied to the membrane or high-performance non-woven filters.
  3. Filter size- As a general rule, the smaller micrometer rating for a filter is healthier. However, there's a trade-off, flow capability sometimes drops off because the micrometer rating gets smaller, particularly if the water includes a ton of sediment. Pearl Water offers an innovative depth filter using high technology that gives the following benefits while not compromising flow.

The depth filters provide:

  • Up to twice the lifetime of standard depth filters
  • Up to 50% lower pressure drop
  • Up to 100% greater dirt-holding capability with superior SDI reduction.

Conclusion

Be aware that sometimes even a smaller filter rating isn't always better. As an example, in many well water applications, sediments cause flow restriction through the filter. The most effective resolution for this type of drawback is to put in a bigger rated filter (i.e. sediment filter) upstream of the smaller micrometer rated filter to get rid of the larger pore-clogging particles and retain a good flow rate. In such things, it's common to see 2 or 3 sediment pre-filters within the water flow, with the higher micrometer rating filters placed at the beginning to get rid of the larger particulate, followed by lower micrometer rating filters. This method extends the lifetime of all filters and, most significantly, the downstream membrane parts.
